Workshop 2 will run for 2 days including presentations and discussions, as well as site visits, including the venue of the meeting itself and possible others to be determined. With the tentative title “Textiles and the court outside the palace”, it will look at the roles played by fabric when the court is on the move outside the palace. This encompasses a variety of situations ranging from royal processions or ‘joyeuses entrées’, when the court moves in the city whose balconies and windows are beautified by hanging textiles, to the setting up of “ephemeral cities” for special occasions such as the meeting of Henry VIII and François I, in 1520, an occasion when textiles where so relevant that it became known as “the field of the golden cloth”, to the more frequent and routinely but no less complex movement of the court from one palace to the other. In all these situations, fabrics played a central, even indispensable role with obvious sensorial implications that will be address in the workshop.
